CAMBRIDGE — Children in Cambridge had the opportunity to Shop with a Cop on Wednesday, Dec. 21, and Thursday, Dec. 22, at the Cambridge Walmart.

Cambridge Police Department coordinated the Shop with a Cop program, with the help of local business sponsors, to give 30 kids a special Christmas this year.

Business sponsors that donated included Dorchester County Care and Share, Walmart, Choptank Electric and C&W Contractors.

The children were chosen by the guidance counselors at each of the elementary schools in the city. They were picked up at home, and given a police escort to the store. The officers

even played holiday songs as they drove through town.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to get together and show our support for children in the community,” said Sgt. Antoine Patton. “We had a lot of people who donated to the police department so we could make this happen. It’s wonderful that we get a chance to interact with the children differently, because they normally see us in a negative way. Today, we’re Santa Claus.”

At Walmart, each child was paired with an officer and given a gift card worth $50 to spend. They roamed the aisles for their perfect gift — dolls, toy trucks, NERF guns, “Star Wars” lightsabers and more.

Shop with a Cop is a nationwide program supported by many law enforcement departments. This is the first year Cambridge has participated.

Patton said this program has encouraged more officers to get on board with the community policing initiative.

Children and officers alike enjoyed the outing, and CPD hopes to do it again next year with the help of the community.

The trucks would have to wait until he got home, but he couldn’t wait to play with his NERF toy.

Officers and the Thursday night group of kids posed before taking to the aisles searching for gifts.

Lieutenant Justin Todd and this young lady smiled for the camera at Shop with A Cop.
