Hooper’s Is­land man dies in New Year’s Eve Pre­ston Crash

PRE­STON — A Hooper’s Is­land man died in a sin­gle-ve­hi­cle crash in Pre­ston at about 7 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Joseph Parks, 31, was pro­nounced dead at the scene, ac­cord­ing to Cpl. Daven­port of the Mary­land State Po­lice Easton Bar­racks. The cause of death is un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

A wo­man at 117 Sun­set Boule­vard dis­cov­ered the ac­ci­dent at 7 a.m. when she looked out her win­dow and saw a red 2004 Chevro­let pickup truck. The driver was in­side the truck. She called 911, and emer­gency per­son­nel re­sponded.

MSP Sgt. Bau­guess said Parks was trav­el­ing south on state Route 331 to­ward Pre­ston, turned right onto Fooks Av­enue and ran through the stop sign at the in­ter­sec­tion with Sun­set Boule­vard. The truck then hit a tree and caused mi­nor dam­age to two ve­hi­cles parked in the drive­way at 117 Sun­set Boule­vard be­fore com­ing to a stop.

So­cial me­dia post­ings in­di­cate the ac­ci­dent af­fected many in the lo­cal emer­gency re­sponse com­mu­nity who knew Parks.

“As fire­fight­ers, EMS, and Law En­force­ment we are not sup­pose (d) to get emo­tion­ally in­volved ... but in our small com­mu­ni­ties it’s hard not to,” Rick Ben­nett, as­sis­tant chief of Pre­ston Vol­un­teer Fire Com­pany, posted on his Face­book page.
