Hooper’s Island man dies in New Year’s Eve Preston Crash
PRESTON — A Hooper’s Island man died in a single-vehicle crash in Preston at about 7 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.
Joseph Parks, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Cpl. Davenport of the Maryland State Police Easton Barracks. The cause of death is under investigation.
A woman at 117 Sunset Boulevard discovered the accident at 7 a.m. when she looked out her window and saw a red 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck. The driver was inside the truck. She called 911, and emergency personnel responded.
MSP Sgt. Bauguess said Parks was traveling south on state Route 331 toward Preston, turned right onto Fooks Avenue and ran through the stop sign at the intersection with Sunset Boulevard. The truck then hit a tree and caused minor damage to two vehicles parked in the driveway at 117 Sunset Boulevard before coming to a stop.
Social media postings indicate the accident affected many in the local emergency response community who knew Parks.
“As firefighters, EMS, and Law Enforcement we are not suppose (d) to get emotionally involved ... but in our small communities it’s hard not to,” Rick Bennett, assistant chief of Preston Volunteer Fire Company, posted on his Facebook page.
Trooper Garrett Graes investigated, along with Tfc. Ryan Clopper.
