— Caroline County sixth grader Olivia Christopher presented a $1,205 check to the Dorchester Relay For Life at the organization;s kickoff on Jan. 31 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cambridge.
The 21st annual Dorchester Relay For Life features a “Heroes of Hope” campaign, and will be held Friday, May 19, at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School.
The at kickof f, co-chairperson Dawn Cook welcomed several new teams, including Christopher’s team, Cambridge Multi-Sports and Team Hyatt. One of the highlights was the presentation of a $1,205 check by Christopher, who put on “Scare Away Cancer” in Federalsburg in October. She is a student at Colonel Richardson Middle School.
Guest speaker at the kickoff was Dr. William Bair, a Cambridge surgeon.
Dr. Bair said much can be done to fight cancer. He said besides avoiding over-exposure to the sun, not smoking and eating a high fiber diet, there are many methods of early detection available, he said.
“We are winning the fight against not all, but many forms of cancer,” he said, pointing to screening mammography and colonoscopy as prime examples.
Bair said in his 24 years as a surgeon, he has seen great reductions in these types of cancers.
“It is no longer a death sentence – especially breast cancer, and it is rare we lose patients to many types of cancer now,” he said.
He recognized the work done by the American Cancer Society by providing transportation for patients needing treatments, breast prostheses and support groups.
He said the staggering totals raised every year, are very humbling.
Several upcoming fundraisers were announced, including a gift certificate quarter auction at 5 p.m. March 31 at the Cambridge Moose Lodge, and the popular Relay auctions at Foxwell Auctions on Moose Lodge Road on April 1, 8, 15 and 22 beginning at 4 p.m. each day.
