CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge SouthDorchester High School Class of 2017 will present “South Pacific” as their senior class play beginning Thursday, March 9.

There will be five performances: 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, and Friday, March 10; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 11; and 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 12. Tickets to the show will be $10 each.

“South Pacific” is a musical based on the 1947 book “Tales from the South Pacific” by James A. Michener, and the central plot follows the progression of two separate love stories.

The lead character, Nellie, is an American nurse stationed on a South Pacific island during World War II, portrayed by Cambridge-SD senior Sarah Gilbertsen.

“I’m ver y excited for the dances” Gilbertsen said. “I’ve really liked hanging out with the whole cast and getting closer with everybody. I’m excited for the show in general.”

Senior Mitchell McDonald will portray Lt. Joseph Cable, a young Marine officer on a spy mission to the island.

“I’m excited because we have a lot of funny scenes,” McDonald said. “We’ve bonded as a group, and we know when something (a funny scene) is coming. We smile backstage waiting for it. The whole process is a bonding experience for the cast, plus it means the end of the year is coming, and we’re about to get out of high school.”

Current theatre teacher Mike James and former theatre teacher Donna James are directing the production. The mother-son team has been directing the senior class play each year since 1985.

“Production is going great so far,” Mike James said. “Everything is going to schedule. This class is extremely enthusiastic and good to work with.”

“It’s a Rogers and Hammerstein classic,” Donna James said. “The music is really good, toe-tapping music.”

Both directors ensured the play has something for everyone to enjoy. It has comedy, drama, romance, and a little action, they said.
