DCA opens July show­case Fri­day

CAM­BRIDGE — Open­ing in the gal­leries at Dorch­ester Cen­ter for the Arts on Fri­day, June 30, is Steve Dembo, Pho­to­graphic Com­men­tary and Karen Hubacker, En­caus­tic Paint­ing.

Steve Dembo is a na­tive of Bal­ti­more, and has been a pho­tog­ra­pher for as long as he can re­mem­ber. He re­ceived his B.A. from Tow­son Univer­sity and an M.F.A and Col­lege Teach­ing of Art Cer­tifi­cate from the Mary­land In­sti­tute Col­lege of Art (MICA).

He is an ad­junct pro­fes­sor of pho­tog­ra­phy at the Com­mu­nity Col­lege of Bal­ti­more County and has been teach­ing col­lege level cour­ses for more than six years. In ad­di­tion, he is a com­pe­ti­tion judge, lec­turer, work­shop fa­cil­i­ta­tor, tu­tor, and men­tor.

His pho­to­graphic work has been crit­i­cally ac­claimed and has gar­nered nu­mer­ous com­pet­i­tive awards and ac­co­lades, hav­ing ap­peared in na­tional pub­li­ca­tions, ju­ried ex­hi­bi­tions, and rec­og­nized by Na­tional Ge­o­graphic. His work was se­lected for Black & White magazine’s 2016 An­nual Sin­gle Im­age Con­test.

Karen Hubacher has been ex­hibit­ing her work in the Wash­ing­ton, DC area for over 20 years. De­spite a child­hood pas­sion for draw­ing and paint­ing, she has a B.S. from Amer­i­can Univer­sity in Com­puter Sys­tems. For 15 years she was a sys­tems an­a­lyst in the De­part­ment of De­fense con­sult­ing in­dus­try.

In 1986 she be­gan study­ing wa­ter­color paint­ing with Su­san Ab­bott, haul­ing a suit­case full of art sup­plies with her on busi­ness trips, paint­ing at night in her ho­tel room. A tem­po­rary move to Korea in 1989, where she was able to de­vote her days ex­clu­sively to paint­ing, was the cat­a­lyst for leav­ing her IT ca­reer and es­tab­lish­ing her­self as a full-time, ex­hibit­ing artist when she moved back to the Wash­ing­ton D.C. area.

Com­bin­ing tech­niques she de­vel­oped dur­ing her printmaking and book arts years, she paints with oil and mixed me­dia, cre­at­ing or­ga­nized ab­stracts with tex­tured sur­faces. Re­cently she has been ex­plor­ing the or­ganic pos­si­bil­i­ties of en­caus­tic, re­sult­ing in a sub­tle, more min­i­mal­ist ex­pres­sion. Us­ing wax to build up her sur­faces, she cre­ates grid-like art­works in vary­ing neu­tral col­ors and tex­tures.

An Artists’ Re­cep­tion will be held on Sec­ond Satur­day, July 8, with mu­sic and light re­fresh­ments. The show runs through July 30.
