CAMBRIDGE — RAR Brewing brought a new addition to the Taste of Cambridge Saturday, July 8, with a pop-up art gallery featuring brewery illustrator B.J. Wheatley.

Wheatley decorated 519 Poplar Street with help from RAR Brewing co-owner Chris Brohawn and staff. They opened the door for visitors at the Taste of Cambridge.

His one-of-a-kind artworks were then put on silent auction during the festival. The auction raised $1,300 for the Cambridge Main Street.

“This is Chris’ idea to put on an art show for all of my stuff,” Wheatley said. “That is pretty cool of him to want to show everyone some of the things I do.”

Wheatley has been drawing for much of his life, and earned an art degree in college before becoming an art teacher. When RAR Brewing opened in downtown Cambridge, Wheatley began doing the logos, art and marketing for the brewery.

“It is cool to be a part of the brewery because it is great to bring something to our hometown, and be a part of such a big, growing business for Cambridge,” he said. “It has been a big thing

for me to use my degree for my career.

“I really like art because it is an easy way to express myself,” he said. “The rest is history.”

Wheatley’s work featured at the gallery included caricatures of each of the brewers of RAR Brewing staff.

“I’m proud to be a part of RAR, and appreciate them giving me an opportunity to be a part of their success,” he said. “I run the taproom next door, and when people come in and ask about the art, it is pretty cool to tell them it is my work.

“It is neat doing the logos and art in-house because RAR is an in-house brewery,” he said. “We create some really cool things right there.”

Brohawn said the gallery saw a big crowd throughout the Taste of Cambridge with people coming and going, and then returning to check on their bids.

“We are very happy to help Cambridge Main Street and show B.J.’s great artwork,” he said. “He is a ver y talented artist, and we are proud of everything he has created for us. We thought this was a great chance to put him in the spotlight, and have some fun.”
