CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge police handed out 225 book bags with school supplies inside to local children Friday, Aug. 25, at the Octavine Saunders Empowerment Center in Cambridge.

The program was part of the “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive with Walmart. Community members donated school supplies to Cambridge police over the summer, and then the department handed out the book bags with supplies.

“With the start of school, it can be a hardship on people to buy school supplies,” said Cambridge Police Sgt. Antoine Patton. “We wanted to make it easy for people by providing school supplies.”

In each book bag, students received two composition

books, two folders, a glue stick, crayons, scissors and pencils.

Children walked away with more than just school supplies. Officers and community members also gave the children a free lunch with a hot dog, popcorn, cotton candy and a drink. Cambridge City Commissioner La-Shon Foster and members of local organizations passed out the food.

“It is wonderful to have such a positive day with the community,” Patton said. “It is fun to get to know the students, and have a chance to spend time with them in this fun way.

“It is great to see so many people out here,” he said. “We appreciate all the support from the community and the local organizations out here today. We are happy to help start the school year with this great, fun event.”

Dorchester County Public Schools returns for the new year Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Patton asked all motorists to be aware of children walking, and the school buses transporting the students.

“When the school year starts, it changes our summer driving schedule with buses on the road, making stops,” he said. “Be sure to stay a safe distance from the school buses, and be on the lookout for the students as they cross the street.”
