CAMBRIDGE — Simmons Center Market in Downtown Cambridge will celebrate 80 successful years of business this September.

Situated in the same spot at 600 Race Street since opening day, Center Market is now owned and operated by County Council President Ricky Travers and his wife Rosi, along with other members of their family.

“I can tell you our is family blessed to be able to do what we’ve done,” said Mr. Travers. “It’s great to be able to carry on the long-standing

tradition that my grandfather started.”

He said he hopes the store will continue to thrive with his family for years to come.

The concept of self-service grocery stores are practically all we know today, but 80 years ago, it was a new concept brought to Cambridge for the first time when Jim and Libby Simmons opened Center Market’s doors.

Today, the market specializes in fresh cut meats, fresh produce, pantry staples, paper products, gifts, and more, all served with good, old-fashioned customer service.

Adjacent to the market is the greenhouse with all manner of flowers and plants available throughout the growing season, including poinsettias for the holidays, plus garden décor such as fountains, statues, and flags.

Center Market also boasts a thriving wholesale business operated out of the store’s second floor, selling bulk products to local restaurants, schools, and events.

The Simmons Center Market family will welcome the community at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, for a “business after hours” open house to celebrate this momentous anniversary. RSVP to the event by contacting the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce at 410-228-3575, info@dorchesterchamber.org, or on the Chamber Facebook event page.
