CAMBRIDGE — Dorchester County and Dueren County, Germany continue its partnership for the 12th year, and Sailwinds Park will be the site for the annual Crabtoberfest hosted by the Dorchester County International Council on Saturday, Sept. 30.

From 3 to 9 p.m. at Sailwinds Governors Hall, festival-goers will enjoy German food, beer, and music, a car show, an expanded kid’s entertainment area, and a Dorchester County Heritage Area, celebrating our county from agriculture to life on the water.

German rock band echte Frunde Mundartband will return this year to perform at the festival.

In 2005, the Dorchester County Council and Dorchester Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Dueren County Council in Germany with the hopes of significantly and positively impacting this

region’s cultural, economic, educational, civic and business environment. The resulting Dorchester–Dueren Sister County Partnership seeks to develop channels to facilitate the exchange of information, ideas, cultures, and business practices between the counties.

This July, Dorchester County hosted six Germany students as part of the Dorchester/Dueren Inter Exchange Program. The student visiting Dorchester were Raja Schaldjbaer, Thomas Prinz, Julia Steven, Stevan Reinautz, Vanessa Marx and Julia Cremer.

The students were a part of the health and public safety fields. Their supervisor was Thomas Ranz who has made the trip to Dorchester County before.

They received a tour of the county, including a afternoon trip on the Skipjack

Nathan of Dorchester where they go to see Cambridge’s Choptank River waterfront from a unique perspective. They also got a lesson in how to catch oysters.

“On the boat was the best part of the visit,” Cremer said. “It is beautiful. Cambridge, Dorchester County is beautiful. Everyone is so welcoming and nice.”

More than 200 students have traveled between Dorchester and Dueren counties as part of this program. The students involved in these exchange trips are very much aware of our economy’s global nature. It is hoped that this opportunity will allow for a more collaborative relationship between nations in the future.

The Dorchester County International Council (DCIC) is a nonprofit organization that has been set up to raise and manage funds related to activities related to this partnership.

Crabtoberfest is DCIC’s primar y fundraising opportunity for the year. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 3 to 12 years of age, and free for children 2 and under. Sponsorship options are still available for the event. For additional information, visit www.Crabtoberfest.com or contact the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce at 410-228-3575.

“Our partnership is ever expanding and diversifying. This year’s Dorchester County exchange students all expressed they had one of the best experiences of their lives,” said Jennifer Brant, president of the DCIC. “This is a unique program of experience and travel for our students and German students, and the program continues to grow.

“Crabtoberfest is our way of giving Dorchester a small taste of German food, music, and fun while raising funds to support activities related to the exchange,” she said. “We moved the event back to Governor’s Hall at Sailwinds Park this year to allow us to have larger and more activities.”
