CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge-South Dorchester High’s girls’ soccer team advanced to the Class 1A East Section II final with Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Mardela.

The Vikings got goals from Emily Brohawn and Leila Robinson, and the defense received strong play from goalkeeper Sa- brina McKelvey, who recorded 14 saves and withstood a late rally from the Warriors.

No. 2 seed Cambridge-SD (8-4-1) is scheduled to visit top-seeded Snow Hill (10-3) on Friday in the 1A East Section II final for a third consecutive. The Eagles, who defeated North Dorchester 8-0 in yesterday’s other section semifinal, eliminated the Vikings in the prior two years.

“Sabrinia had an amazing game like she usually does,” Vikings defensive captain Haley Wright said. “This last week we were really focusing on our defensive aspect because Mardela has a really strong front line. We wanted to focus more on pushing them to the outside, and we did that really well today.

“It really felt good the defense could hold it down there at the end,” she added. “Now, we can go on to Snow Hill, which is a good matchup for us.”

It took only 33 seconds for Cambridge-SD to get on the board when Brohawn corralled a loose ball and lofted a shot over Mardela keeper Peyton Cline’s head for a goal.

The Warriors (2-11) responded with their own attack, pressuring the ball in the goal box. McKelvey denied all challenges with six first-half saves.

In the 21st minute, Mardela forward Mallory Sterrett found a crease and rushed toward the net, but was cut off by Wright, who kicked the ball out of bounds.

The Vikings’ offense countered with two scoring chances in the next five minutes. The first came off a corner kick when Brooke Windsor found an opening for a shot, but Cline made the save. Leila Robinson then streaked along the right side and delivered a shot, but Cline again made the save.

With less than two minutes left, Mardela threatened when Caeleigh Schirner gained control of a loose ball, but sailed her shot wide.

In the second half, the Vikings controlled the early possessions. Wright sailed a free kick in the goal box for a streaking Natalie

Kerr, but Kerr’s long stretch could not connect and Cline gobbled up the pass.

Abby Robinson and Leila Robinson had consecutive scoring chances in the 52nd minute but each sent shots high over the net.

The duo would connect in the 61st minute to put CSD up 2-0. Abby Robinson corralled a loose ball, dished to Riley Keener who found Windsor in the middle of the field. Windsor then lofted a pass to a streaking Leila Robinson, whose blast found the back of the net.

“Leila has a nice hard shot, and she took a lot of them today,” Wright said. “She does a great job out there. Her shot is a real weapon.

“Brohawn has these little tricks she does to get goals when the balls are bouncing around,” Wright added. “Brohawn got us started fast. The entire offense and midfield played great all day to get us a lead.”

The Warriors mounted a strong counter attack to get back in the game. In the 67th minute, Sterrett cut the lead in half with a goal. Mardela continued the pressure, but Wright and her teammates kept the middle clear. When the Warriors came to the middle, CSD sent balls back toward midfield, chewing up valuable seconds.

The Vikings kept pushing on offense as well. Though they did not score, CSD held the ball for several minutes in the offensive team to kill time.
