Taste of Cam­bridge set for Satur­day

CAM­BRIDGE — The 13th an­nual Taste of Cam­bridge crab cook-off and street fes­ti­val be­gins at 5 p.m. Satur­day, July 14, in down­town Cam­bridge.

Or­ga­niz­ers will wel­come back a num­ber of past par­tic­i­pants, in­clud­ing Wa­ter’s Edge Grill, Blue Point Pro­vi­sion Co., Palm Beach Wil­lies, Ocean Odyssey, Cam­bridge Yacht Club, Katie Mae’s Coun­try Restau­rant, RAR Brew­ing, Jim­mie and Sook’s, The High Spot and Rock Lob­stah. Lil’ Bitta Bull and Theodore’s Subs and Small Plates are new to the com­pe­ti­tion in 2018.

The Crab Cake/Ball cat­e­gory fea­tures The High Spot and RAR Brew­ing. Crab soup will have Black Wa­ter Bak­ery Palm Beach Wil­lies and Theodore’s Subs & Small Plates. Crab Dip in­cludes Blue Point Pro­vi­sion Co., Jim­mie & Sooks Raw Bar and Grill and Thodore’s Subs & Small Plates. The Crab Spe­cialty cat­e­gory has the most en­tries with Wa­ter’s Edge Grill, Palm Beach Wil­lies, Cam­bridge Yacht Club, Lil Bitta Bull and Ocean Odyssey par­tic­i­pat­ing.

Ticket-hold­ers will get the chance to taste, de­cide and vote on more than 14 crab dishes in five cat­e­gories — crab cake/ball, crab soup, crab dip, crab spe­cialty and over­all win­ner. All the votes will be tal­lied up, and a “Peo­ple’s Choice” win­ner will be an­nounced for each cat­e­gory.

The restau­rants also will vie for the at­ten­tion of a panel of judges. This year’s judges in­clude Bruce Mat­tel, in­struc­tor at Culi­nary In­sti­tute of Amer­ica; Kate Moose, food ed­i­tor for What’s Up Mag­a­zine; and Cam­bridge Spice Com­pany owner Ce­cil John­son. All three are veteran judges for the event and bring dif­fer­ent per­spec­tives. Katie Livie, free­lance food writer with re­gional herba­vore pub­li­ca­tion Ed­i­ble Del­marva, is new to the judge’s panel this year.

En­ter­tain­ment for the event will in­clude a num­ber of lo­cal per­form­ers, in­clud­ing Dorch­ester County na­tive Arty Hill and the Long Gone Dad­dys, who will hit the stage be­tween 8 and 10 p.m.

“We had a great dance party last year, with Arty Hill mak­ing every­one swing to the beat at the in­ter­sec­tion of Race and Po­plar streets,” said Taste of Cam­bridge event chair­man and Down­town Cam­bridge Board Pres­i­dent Grace Gon­za­lez.

Per­for­mances by com­mu­nity fa­vorites the ABM Dance troupe and the Dorch­ester YMCA line dance group also will be fea­tured, as well as a one-man show by John En­ders of Cam­bridge. Be­fore Your Time, with front man Shelby Clen­daniel, also will make its re­turn to Po­plar Street to per­form.

Down­town Cam­bridge is a non­profit or­ga­ni­za­tion ded­i­cated to the re­vi­tal­iza­tion of the down­town Main Street district in Cam­bridge.
