Dorchester Historical Society History Book Club Sept. 7
In its second year, the Dorchester County Historical Society History Book Club continues to meet at the historic Meredith House under the direction of Laura Layton, retired high school English teacher. The September meeting will be at noon Friday, Sept. 7, (pizza provided) and the book is “Women in the Castle” by Jessica Shattuck. The Meredith House is located at 1003 Greenway Drive in Cambridge. Salem UM Church Oyster Sandwich Sale Sept. 8
Salem United Methodist Church will have an oyster sandwich sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Middletown Branch Road in Salem. In addition to sandwiches for sale, there will be a bake sale, yard sale and silent auction. The proceeds will benefit the church’s sanctuary beautification project.
Wesleyan Church Community Supper Sept. 8
Cambridge Wesleyan Church, at the corner of Washington and Race streets in Cambridge, will have a free community supper from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept 8. Richardson Maritime Museum Ship Visit Sept. 8-9
The Richardson Maritime Museum is scheduled to welcome the Maryland Dove to Cambridge. The museum’s own Jim Richardson built the tall ship in 1978. It serves as St. Mary’s City floating ambassador. The museum is celebrating the ship’s 40th anniversar y with the visit to the Eastern Shore. The planks will be down from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Sunday, Sept. 9. Tours of the ship will be open to the public. Donations will be accepted.
Church Creek VFC Auxiliary Bingo Sept. 8
The Church Creek VFC Auxiliary will host bingo Saturday, Sept. 8. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games start at 6 p.m. There will be food and entertainment for the entire family.
Dorchester Historical Society Program Meeting Sept. 11
The Dorchester County Historical Society invites the public to bring their recommendations for programming and an exhibit on Dorchester County’s best- it’s first responders during a meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11. A casual format is planned to allow for mostly public input for this discussion. If you would like to honor a person who embodies the selfless and heroic characteristics that are true to these public servants, bring your knowledge along with any photos and artifacts that help tell the story. If you or someone you know have been part of a group that jumps into action when needed, please come and share. Our only requirement is that they be from Dorchester. This will be a learning experience. This will be held at the Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester at 1003 Greenway Drive in Cambridge. Hunter Safety Class Sept. 12, 14, 19, 21, 22
A five-session Hunter Safety Education Class is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12, 14, 19, 21, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday Sept. 22. All sessions will be held at the Thendara 4-H Center, 6275 Lord’s Crossing Road near Hurlock. Ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian. The class is open to all interested persons. There is no fee to take this course. If you have a disability that requires special assistance for your participation in this class, please contact Conrad Arnold at 410-330-5967 prior to Sept. 12. The class will meet requirements of the Department of Natural Resources Police for an individual to be eligible to obtain a Maryland Hunting License. To successfully complete the course, you must attend all five class sessions, pass a written and practical exam, as well as participate in live firing exercises.
