Fire­fighter dies in line of duty Satur­day

QUEEN ANNE — A vol­un­teer fire­fighter died in the line of duty af­ter suf­fer­ing a med­i­cal emer­gency at the scene of a head-on crash early Satur­day af­ter­noon, Sept. 1, on state Route 404.

As­sis­tant Fire Chief Danny Lis­ter was work­ing at the scene of the crash be­tween Route 309 (Starr Road) and Old Queen Anne Road in Tal­bot County when he suf­fered a med­i­cal emer­gency, the Queen Anne-Hills­boro Vol­un­teer Fire Com­pany Inc. said Satur­day night in a press re­lease. Res­cue per­son­nel tried un­suc­cess­fully to re­sus­ci­tate Lis­ter at the scene, and he died at the Univer­sity of Mary­land Shore Med­i­cal Cen­ter at Eas­ton.

Lis­ter was among nu­mer­ous vol­un­teer fire­fight­ers, emer­gency med­i­cal ser­vices per­son­nel, po­lice and state high­way crews who re­sponded to the two-ve­hi­cle head-on crash that oc­curred about 1:48 p.m. Satur­day.

“We are deeply sad­dened by the loss of As­sis­tant Fire Chief Daniel Lis­ter, a ded­i­cated mem­ber of the Queen Anne-Hills­boro Vol­un­teer Fire Com­pany who passed away to­day while re­spond­ing to a ve­hi­cle ac­ci­dent,” Gov. Larry Ho­gan wrote on his Twit­ter ac­count Satur­day night. Ho­gan also or­dered the United States flag and the Mary­land flag to be flown at half­staff in honor and mem­ory of Lis­ter.

“The First Lady and I are keep­ing Chief Lis­ter’s fam­ily in our prayers dur­ing this dif­fi­cult time,” Ho­gan wrote on his Twit­ter ac­count. “I have or­dered flags to fly at half staff un­til he is laid to rest.”

Daniel “Danny” Lee Lis­ter was born on March 18, 1984, in Eas­ton, the son of Donna Jo Lis­ter of Cor­dova and the late Thomas Michael Lis­ter.

Danny grad­u­ated from Eas­ton High School, Class of 2003, and Mary­land Fire Res­cue In­sti­tute and re­ceived var­i­ous fire and EMS cer­ti­fi­ca­tions.

Danny was a risk man­ager at Queen Anne’s County De­part­ment of Hu­man Re­sources and as­sis­tant chief for Queen Anne-Hills­boro Vol­un­teer Fire Com­pany.

He was a mem­ber of Queen Anne-Hills­boro Vol­un­teer Fire Com­pany for 15 years, where he has held po­si­tions of lieu­tenant, cap­tain, as­sis­tant chief, deputy chief and chief.

Danny is sur­vived by his mother, Donna Jo Lis­ter, of Cor­dova; brother, Michael An­thony Lis­ter; his fi­ance, Lauren Baker, of Hills­boro; his son, Noah Michael Lis­ter; grand­par­ents, Marie and David La­ri­more; mother of Noah, Laura Fox; and his beloved pets, Gus, Patches and Oreo.

He was pre­ceded in death by his fa­ther, Thomas Michael Lis­ter; and grand­mother, Betty Lis­ter.

A vis­i­ta­tion will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Fri­day, Sept. 7, at the Ch­e­sa­peake Col­lege, Todd Per­form­ing Arts Cen­ter, 1000 Col­lege Cir­cle, Wye Mills, where the service will be held at 11 a.m. Satur­day, Sept. 8. Burial will be pri­vate.
