Firefighter dies in line of duty Saturday
QUEEN ANNE — A volunteer firefighter died in the line of duty after suffering a medical emergency at the scene of a head-on crash early Saturday afternoon, Sept. 1, on state Route 404.
Assistant Fire Chief Danny Lister was working at the scene of the crash between Route 309 (Starr Road) and Old Queen Anne Road in Talbot County when he suffered a medical emergency, the Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company Inc. said Saturday night in a press release. Rescue personnel tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Lister at the scene, and he died at the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton.
Lister was among numerous volunteer firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, police and state highway crews who responded to the two-vehicle head-on crash that occurred about 1:48 p.m. Saturday.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Lister, a dedicated member of the Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company who passed away today while responding to a vehicle accident,” Gov. Larry Hogan wrote on his Twitter account Saturday night. Hogan also ordered the United States flag and the Maryland flag to be flown at halfstaff in honor and memory of Lister.
“The First Lady and I are keeping Chief Lister’s family in our prayers during this difficult time,” Hogan wrote on his Twitter account. “I have ordered flags to fly at half staff until he is laid to rest.”
Daniel “Danny” Lee Lister was born on March 18, 1984, in Easton, the son of Donna Jo Lister of Cordova and the late Thomas Michael Lister.
Danny graduated from Easton High School, Class of 2003, and Maryland Fire Rescue Institute and received various fire and EMS certifications.
Danny was a risk manager at Queen Anne’s County Department of Human Resources and assistant chief for Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company.
He was a member of Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Company for 15 years, where he has held positions of lieutenant, captain, assistant chief, deputy chief and chief.
Danny is survived by his mother, Donna Jo Lister, of Cordova; brother, Michael Anthony Lister; his fiance, Lauren Baker, of Hillsboro; his son, Noah Michael Lister; grandparents, Marie and David Larimore; mother of Noah, Laura Fox; and his beloved pets, Gus, Patches and Oreo.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Michael Lister; and grandmother, Betty Lister.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, at the Chesapeake College, Todd Performing Arts Center, 1000 College Circle, Wye Mills, where the service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. Burial will be private.
