FOR YOUR READING PLEASURE
TWO OF DRAG RACING’S MOST ILLUSTRIOUS JOURNALISTS, BOB MCCLURG AND STEVE REYES, HAVE BROUGHT US SUPERB BOOKS COURTESY OF CARTECH.
McClurg’s tome is The History of AMC Motorsports Trans-Am, Quarter-Mile, NASCAR, Bonneville and More. It’s the first book published about the rich history of AMC racing.
When contemplating factory racing involvement, AMC doesn’t immediately come to mind. Yet from the beginning of American motorsports, the companies that became AMC were seriously committed.
Veteran racing journalist McClurg covers it all, from Nash– American Motors’ corporate history, the first years of NASCAR, the ’60s efforts including Trans-Am and drag racing Super Stock programs to the Craig Breedlove land speed record efforts. Not to mention, the ’70s Trans-Am championships with Donahue and Penske, and finally the NASCAR success with Bobby Allison.
The 204-page hardcover history features 292 color and black-andwhite photos.
Steve Reyes’ contribution is Top Fuel Dragsters Drag Racing’s Rear-Engine Revolution. This is the first time the legendary photog has dedicated a book strictly to this class and era.
In the early ’70s, Top Fuelers, the kings of the sport, were about to be dethroned by the upstart Funny Car contingent. Additionally, the front-motor slingshots were experiencing escalating carnage culminating in
Don Garlits’ catastrophic clutch explosion. His resulting mastery of the rear-engine configuration sparked a revolution in T/F technology.
The resulting wave of new construction allowed Top Fuelers to retain their throne. Reyes witnessed this explosive period and has chronicled the excitement in photos and words. This 176-page softcover work contains 300 of his vivid color photos.
