Labria Lanaux is pas­sion­ate about 3 things Food, Mu­sic, Travel

Through the ac­tiv­i­ties Labria was a part of in school such as the culi­nary team, band, and a club she joined that oc­ca­sion­ally trav­eled the globe; all played a ma­jor part in her suc­cess to ac­com­plish her dream at a young age. A year­long achieve­ment pro­gram spon­sored by the NAACP, ACT-SO (Afro-Aca­demic, Cul­tural, Tech­no­log­i­cal and Sci­en­tific Olympics) is de­signed to re­cruit, stim­u­late and en­cour­age aca­demic and cul­tural achieve­ments among high school stu­dents of African de­scent. Labria’s path to the ACT-SO gold medal ac­tu­ally started at the Hy­att Re­gency in Hous­ton where she was men­tored by Frank Ma­jow­icz, the long­time ex­ec­u­tive chef of the iconic down­town Hous­ton ho­tel. Af­ter fall­ing short in the na­tional com­pe­ti­tion in 2015, Labria spent up to four hours ev­ery Satur­day, work­ing tire­lessly with Chef Ma­jow­icz in the kitchen where she wrote recipes, de­vel­oped menu items and en­hanced her cook­ing tech­niques. Labria’s win­ning en­try fea­tured two Mediter­raneanin­spired items; a to­mato and goat cheese flat­bread and a Mediter­ranean herb chicken with lemon zest vinai­grette. In ad­di­tion to win­ning the com­pe­ti­tion’s highly cov­eted gold medal, Labria earned a two-year schol­ar­ship from the pres­ti­gious Culi­nary In­sti­tute of Amer­ica. She was also a part of the Na­tional Honor So­ci­ety, and the Delta Gems, an or­ga­ni­za­tion whose high­light is com­mu­nity ser­vice. She is cur­rently at­tend­ing the Univer­sity of Hous­ton, where she will ma­jor in Ho­tel and Restau­rant Man­age­ment. In Jan­uary, she will be study­ing Culi­nary Arts at the Culi­nary In­sti­tute of Amer­ica where she has won a par­tial tu­ition schol­ar­ship. Labria has many goals in life, such as trav­el­ing the world, own­ing her restau­rant and be­com­ing a per­sonal chef. She also in­tend­s­tends to pub­lish a cook­book, get a de de­gree in Amer­i­cann Sign Lan­guage and at some point trav­elel as a flight at­ten­dant. Labria Lanaux, a se­nior at Carl Wun­sche High Schoolol took home the gold medal at the 2016 16 ACT-SO na­tion­alal culi­nary com­peti­ti­tion, which was part of the re­cent nt NAACP con­ven­tion held in Cincin­nati. Ev­ery week­end, Labria came in de­ter­mined to learn some­thing new and take her skills in the culi­nary arts to an­other level,” says Ma­jow­icz, a sup­porter of ACT-SO since 2009. She’s an­other shin­ing star for the City of Hous­ton.
