Through the activities Labria was a part of in school such as the culinary team, band, and a club she joined that occasionally traveled the globe; all played a major part in her success to accomplish her dream at a young age. A yearlong achievement program sponsored by the NAACP, ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) is designed to recruit, stimulate and encourage academic and cultural achievements among high school students of African descent. Labria’s path to the ACT-SO gold medal actually started at the Hyatt Regency in Houston where she was mentored by Frank Majowicz, the longtime executive chef of the iconic downtown Houston hotel. After falling short in the national competition in 2015, Labria spent up to four hours every Saturday, working tirelessly with Chef Majowicz in the kitchen where she wrote recipes, developed menu items and enhanced her cooking techniques. Labria’s winning entry featured two Mediterraneaninspired items; a tomato and goat cheese flatbread and a Mediterranean herb chicken with lemon zest vinaigrette. In addition to winning the competition’s highly coveted gold medal, Labria earned a two-year scholarship from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. She was also a part of the National Honor Society, and the Delta Gems, an organization whose highlight is community service. She is currently attending the University of Houston, where she will major in Hotel and Restaurant Management. In January, she will be studying Culinary Arts at the Culinary Institute of America where she has won a partial tuition scholarship.
