Parkers Chapel holds on for win
News-Times Staff PARKERS CHAPEL - Parkers Chapel's defense came up with a huge stand, stopping a two-point conversion to knock off Harmony Grove 21-20 in junior high football on Thursday.
The Trojans led 21-8 in the final stanza before the Hornets made their late rally.
However, after getting the stop on the two-point conversion, the Trojans recovered an onside kick to seal the victory.
Trace Shoup threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another for the Trojans (2-1, 1-0), who won their 8-2A opener.
Shoup tossed a 20-yard strike to Lancer Clark on fourth-and-goal, and Shoup's successful run on the twopoint conversion tied the game at 8-all.
It was the start of 21 unanswered points for the Trojans.
Just before halftime, Shoup scored on a 15-yard run to give the Trojans a 14-8 lead at intermission.
In the third quarter, the Trojans struck again on fourth down.
On fourth-and-8, Shoup fired a 45-yard touchdown pass to Carter Jones.
Jones then added the extra point to make it 21-8 before the dramatic finish.
The coaching staff said Edison Thompson had a solid game running the ball for the Trojans.
Harmony Grove won the seventh-grade game.
BARTON TOPS HAMPTON TO STAY UNDEFEATED The Wildkittens ran their record to 3-0 by downing Hampton 29-14 at Memorial Stadium.
On their first possession, Ahmad Marbray scored on a 19-yard run, and Jackie Washington ran in the twopoint conversion to give Barton an 8-0 lead.
The Wildkittens quickly got the ball back after recovering the kickoff and took advantage with Sharmon Rester throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to David Ayree.
Marbray's run on the two-point conversion made it 16-0, which was the score at intermission.
After the Bulldogs pulled to within 16-6, Barton answered.
Starting at their 30, Kameron Bibby broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 22-6.
In the fourth quarter, Rester closed the Wildkittens' scoring with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Washington.
Addison Dumas kicked the extra point to give Barton a 29-6 lead before the Bulldogs scored later in the period to cap the scoring in the contest.
The coaching staff said the defense turned in an outstanding performance. In the "B" game, Hampton and Barton played to a scoreless tie.
WEST SIDE CHRISTIAN FALLS
West Side Christian's volleyball was downed in straight sets by Christian Ministries Academy by scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 26-24.
The Lady Warriors also fell in the JV game in straight sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-12.
West Side Christian (12-3) plays at Garrett Memorial Christian today at 4:30 p.m.
JUNCTION CITY TAKES SECOND
Earlier this week, Junction City's golf team came in second place in a threeteam match with Crossett and Fordyce.
Brennan Aycock earned medalist honors with a 42 for the Dragons.
Clay Jolley shot a 52 and Haden Wilson added a 55 for Junction City, who finished four strokes behind Crossett with a team score of 149.
