POINTED QUESTIONS, ACUTE OBSERVATIONS
Neither forensic analysis nor crime scene investigation is ever carried out “at random”; instead, the investigator develops a specific set of questions that need to be answered. As investigator I wanted to answer a number of questions by examining the skeletons of the four horses analyzed in this series. Specifically for this month’s report, we would like to know: • Do the skeletons reveal any developmental anomalies? Might any such anomaly have had an impact on the ongoing soundness or athletic capabilities of the horse? Does the anomaly reveal genetic relationships or breed affiliation? • Can broken bones be detected in any of the horses, and if so, what is the most likely cause? • What was the soundness status of each horse at the time of his death? For example, it has been reported that Ethan Allen suffered from bone spavin. Do his remains confirm this? • What was the condition of the horses’ hooves at the time of death?
