Who wrote the song

EQUUS - - Letters -

We are thoroughly enjoying Deb Bennett, PhD’s wonderful series of articles about the history and bloodlines of horse breeds. “The Stuff of Legend” (Conformation Insights, EQUUS 491) is again an outstanding article and fascinating read.

We would like to make one correction, however, regarding the authorship of the song “The Tennessee Stud” mentioned in the article. Doc Watson recorded the song several times, but he did not write it. It was written by Jimmy Driftwood, born James Corbitt Morris, who first released it in 1959. Doc Watson was one of many artists to cover the song, including Eddy Arnold, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Johnny Cash. Susie and Steve Duncan Grayson, Kentucky
