A nu­tri­ent is any sub­stance that an or­gan­ism needs to grow and main­tain life.

Macronu­tri­ents are sub­stances re­quired in large amounts–typ­i­cally fats, car­bo­hy­drates and pro­teins– nec­es­sary for en­ergy and to be­come the build­ing blocks of cells.
