During the outdoor fun and games part of the Escalon Christian Reformed Church Vacation Bible School, youngsters – with a little help from their youth leaders – took aim with the water balloon sling shot, hoping to get the balloon on to the parachute being held by fellow VBS attendees. When it hit the mark, the balloon burst, providing a welcome spray of cool water.

Over 100 kids, on average, attended the Escalon Christian Reformed Church Vacation Bible School this past week. Festivities were hosted at the church on California Street, running from 9 a.m. to noon July 10 through 14.

“We’ve had a good turnout again this year,” said coordinator Heidi Veldstra. “The most kids we had on one day was 105, it has been a good week.”

Theme for the VBS was Maker Fun Factory, based on Psalm 139, with the thought that “God made us for a reason,” said Veldstra.

Each day featured games, crafts, a Bible story, Kid-Vid cinema with videos of kids conquering fears and overcoming challenges.

The mission project this year raised money for Operation Kid to Kid, the funds helping to provide clean water for kids in Peru.

“Every $5 we raise gives one child water for a year,” Veldstra said.

The VBS was open to kids entering kindergarten through fifth grades, while helpers were those entering sixth grade and up, along with several adult team leaders.

A fun feature this year was a candy jar guessing game, with three jars of candy offered, and a winner drawn from each division – K-2, 3-5 and VBS staff. The VBS concluded on Friday with a hot dog lunch and a performance by attendees for their family and friends.

Always ready for a snack, these VBS attendees gather around to choose a tasty treat after taking part in the outdoor games.
