Brass Tacks

Where did we get the expression “getting down to brass tacks”?

From early English drapers’ shops. The linen draper placed brass tacks along the inner edge of his counter and used them to measure off the material his customers wished to buy. When a woman finished looking over his stock and got down to stating the amount of cloth she wished to buy she was “getting down to brass tacks.”
