Escalon Times - - FRONT PAGE -

A Citywide Yard Sale, Science Saturday and Sunday in the Park will all add up to a busy weekend for Escalon residents.

The silver anniversary of the city’s popular annual yard sale is on the schedule for Saturday, Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Organized by the City of Escalon and marking its 25th year, the sale gives residents the chance to host a coordinated citywide event, drawing in shoppers from throughout the region for that day. A $5 fee gets your address on the map that is distributed by the city as well.

At press time on Tuesday, the number of listed addresses for sales was at just about 100, a total higher than last year. Maps with the addresses will be printed and placed in multiple locations beginning Thursday, Oct. 5.

Grocery stores, many local restaurants, convenience stores, some businesses and Escalon City Hall will all have copies available. The map can also be downloaded from the City of Escalon website, visit www.cityofescalon.org and go to the home page; the map will be on the scrolling news feed portion on that page. The maps will also be available outside City Hall at 2060 McHenry Ave. on Saturday, placed on a stand for those that haven’t had a chance to pick them up prior to sale day.

Sales range from single family to churches, multiple family events to those outside the city limits renting spaces in the Main Street Park to show their wares. The city’s Chamber of Commerce offers the spaces (at least 20-by-20) in the park for a $25 donation to the Chamber; call if you want to reserve a spot for the day on Saturday.

Even as shoppers inundate the community looking for treasures, the Escalon Library will be hosting its first of the month Science Saturday. This weekend’s event is Mining and Math, scheduled for noon on Saturday, Oct. 7. Participants will use tools to earn ‘cookie cash’ by mining chocolate chips out of their cookies. Buying cookies and tools wisely, kids can earn the cash and the most successful miner will go home with their own box of cookies at the end of the day.

Science Saturday offers fun, inventive ways for kids to learn math and science concepts and is sponsored by the Friends of the Escalon Library.

Closing out the weekend with a special event on Sunday, Oct. 8, it is the fifth annual Homemade Costume Contest and Pumpkin Carving at Main Street Park, hosted by the Escalon Chamber of Commerce as part of its Sundays in the Park family fun series.

Open to all kids in the community, this free family event features pumpkin carving from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the costume contest from noon to 12:30 p.m., right by the Main Street Stage. Different age groups will be featured for the costume contest, with prizes awarded. Costumes must be homemade. Pumpkins will be provided for the carving and kids can take them home after the event.

Antique cars on display will feature Halloween themes, the historic caboose will be open for tours and there will be popcorn, music, games and fun.
