THIS OLD BARN
MY HUSBAND, JERRY, AND I OWN this 32-by-50-foot barn on land in rural Canby, Minnesota. When we bought it in 2011, it was in great need of repair. A new metal roof was installed in 2012, electrical in 2013 and wood siding in 2014; fresh paint followed in 2015. We also repaired the doors and haymow floor and added rustic slab stairs built from trees in our woods. We hired out only the roof and electrical work. My father, Jim, repaired the cupola. An old glass lightning rod ball and a horse weather vane finished the job. It was truly a labor of love. The completed restoration coincided with our 25th wedding anniversary, and we celebrated with a barn-warming party in June 2015.
