Welcome to another issue of World of Firepower, and the first issue of 2018. Looking back, 2017 was a blur filled with great guns, great gear, and great shooting experiences. As we go to press we are already gearing up for SHOT Show 2018. WOF editors and contributors will be out in force absorbing all the latest and greatest offerings from the all the industry’s major players and we’ll be bringing you in-depth coverage as these products become available.
Speaking of the latest and greatest, in this issue we bring you reviews on not just one but two highly anticipated releases that have both been quite a while in the making: Desert Tech’s MDR bullpup rifle, which enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating since 2014, and Heckler & Koch’s SP5K, the latest consumer iteration of the venerable MP5 that has been decades in the making. Check them both out on pages 22 and 44, respectively.
In preparation for SHOT 2018, we have assembled a buyer’s guide chock full of upgrades and enhancements for the ubiquitous Glock platform. Glocks might be considered the Chevy small blocks of the firearms world, there is so much available for them, and we had to be painfully judicious in our selection of what to show you in our admittedly limited print space. There is simply not enough paper available to give a complete rundown of all the great stuff that’s out there for consumption. Check it all out starting on page 66.
Elsewhere in this issue, we take a very special trip to Wyoming to attend the christening of a spanking-new shooting retreat: High Bar Homestead. Situated on the grounds of the old Surefire Training Academy, High Bar was conceived and built as an all-inclusive getaway that marries first-class accommodations with more than a dozen shooting ranges for rifles, pistols, shotguns and tactical scenarios. In addition to touring the Homestead, being pampered in the lap of luxury, and sampling the lion’s share of range activities, we were also able to sample products from Grey Ghost Precision, Hornady, Leupold, Silencerco, and TNVC. To be perfectly honest, we were spoiled rotten and we’re already scheming for a way to return. Check out our review starting on page 60.
And last, yes, we admit—we may have a gear problem. Specifically, a problem with toting all our stuff to the range. If you’re reading these pages, chances are good that you have the same problem. We received a new range tote from Cannae Pro Gear to help us better cope with said problem: the Triplex Acies 3 Gun Bag. This wonder of engineering allows us to easily stow three long guns (or two long guns and a mess of pistols) and incorporates myriad stowage features that allow us to stash a ton of necessary extras like magazines, ear pro, rangefinders, and anything else that might be sorely missed were it not with us at the range. Have a look at our findings on page 110.
All things considered, 2018 looks to be another very promising year in the world of firepower. Hit us up on social media to say hi, and let us know what you like or what you might like to see in these pages. And as we said, we’ll be pounding the pavement at SHOT the third week of January. Maybe we’ll see you there.
