HOW IT FLATTERS: Long one-dimensional locks can drag features down and sap skin’s vibrance. “But face-framing highlights create long ribbons of light that reflect onto skin for an instant brightening effect,” says colorist James Corbett, who has worked with A-listers like Christina Hendricks. “And chopping strands to the shoulders gives them, and the face, a youthful lift.”

GET THE CUT: Ask your stylist for a collarbone-length cut with faceframing layers and razored ends.

GET THE COLOR AT HOME: Apply the formula from a highlighting kit for dark hair (like Revlon Color Effects Frost & Glow in Honey, $7, Walmart.com) onto 1⁄2" sections of hair around the face; let sit 30 minutes; rinse. To ensure highlights don’t look brassy, finish with a gloss (like Clairol Natural Instincts in #6A-Light Cool Brown, $7, Target.com) to nix orangey tones.
