Give your­self a quick break to touch and smell a grow­ing plant and you’ll heighten your abil­ity to con­cen­trate on a task—and shut out dis­trac­tions—by at least 27 per­cent, ac­cord­ing to re­searchers at the Uni­ver­sity of Michi­gan in Ann Ar­bor. How? It turns out that the com­bi­na­tion of the smell and feel of green­ery stim­u­lates the pre­frontal cor­tex—the por­tion of the brain that keeps you calm and on task, even when you’re sur­rounded by bed­lam.
