WHAT’S NEW

This season, floral designers are skipping classic vases and styling blooms in fresh alternatives—like gourds! “Here, the smooth orange pumpkin allows the frilly textured autumn flowers—in shades of pink and purple—to pop,” notes floral expert Renee Landry, owner of Renee Landry Events. “Whether displayed on a front porch or a table, this bouquet offers a fun fall welcome to friends and family!”

GET THE LOOK

Slice off the top third of a pumpkin and scoop out the pulp and seeds. Then place a large water-filled glass inside. To help keep the glass upright, tuck crumpled paper towels around it. Next, snip two dozen purple and pink blooms (like mums, dahlias, bleeding hearts and hydrangeas) to 10 inches and add to the glass one at a time, crisscrossing stems to form a soft mound. Place the gourd in a purple serving bowl.

INSIDER’S SECRET

The fresh-cut autumn blooms will fade before the pumpkin “vase” in this display. But you can showcase your gourd for weeks by swapping the wilted flowers for a candle or two! To do: Remove the flowers from the glass and pour out the water. Dry the glass with a cloth, fill with dried lentils or beans and nestle a few taper candles in the dried beans for an easy sparkling display that’s sure to wow!
