Prac­tic­ing Pi­lates can help ease lower-back pain and the re­sult­ing loss of func­tion and mo­bil­ity it causes, say re­searchers in the United King­dom. In a small study, peo­ple with chronic lower-back pain who did Pi­lates—a work­out em­pha­siz­ing flex­i­bil­ity, core strength and con­trolled move­ments—twice a week for six weeks had a 42 per­cent im­prove­ment in func­tion and a 27 per­cent re­duc­tion in pain.
