A chocolatey treat can be a powerful brain booster, according to Italian researchers. Their research review, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, revealed that adults who enjoy 1 oz. of dark chocolate (a serving the size of a domino) three hours before a cognitive test perform 53% better and their responses are 14% faster. And enjoying dark chocolate daily for two months improves mental speed by 39% in those with mild cognitive decline. The researchers credit cocoa’s rich stores of flavonoids, which boost blood flow to the memory and learning centers of the brain.
