This fam­ily turned to the 20th-cen­tury Space Age to dec­o­rate their color­ful retro home.

Her hus­band, Adam, is a car­pen­ter, and they are se­rial ren­o­va­tors who have been buy­ing and re­do­ing homes since the 1990s. “There’s no way we’d ever buy one that was al­ready per­fect,” says Kate. But their cur­rent home seems like a keeper. “It didn’t ap­pear to have changed much since the 1970s,” she says, “which was bliss be­cause it meant it still had the old wall­pa­per and lots of retro items. It was one of the main rea­sons we wanted it.” The four-bed­room home, orig­i­nally from the 1920s, had been ex­tended four times, though not al­ways very log­i­cally. There were weird, sus­pended of­fice-style ceil­ings with tile in some spots, some truly out­dated car­pets that had to go, and a back ex­ten­sion that had partly wooden walls, no heat­ing and a flat roof.
