Her husband, Adam, is a carpenter, and they are serial renovators who have been buying and redoing homes since the 1990s. “There’s no way we’d ever buy one that was already perfect,” says Kate. But their current home seems like a keeper. “It didn’t appear to have changed much since the 1970s,” she says, “which was bliss because it meant it still had the old wallpaper and lots of retro items. It was one of the main reasons we wanted it.” The four-bedroom home, originally from the 1920s, had been extended four times, though not always very logically. There were weird, suspended office-style ceilings with tile in some spots, some truly outdated carpets that had to go, and a back extension that had partly wooden walls, no heating and a flat roof.
