Grumman TBF Avenger

Flight Journal - - REVIEW RUNWAY -

Distributed by Aiken’s Airplanes, Flight Wing’s 1:18-scale static display model is a replica of the Avenger flown by Lt. (j.g.) George Bush. The Avenger has many movable parts and comes with a nicely applied finish. Priced at $198.95, the Avenger spans an impressive 36 inches and is 27.25 inches long and 9 inches tall at the top of the canopy. Three posable crewmen as well as a torpedo and eight wing-mounted rockets are included in the package. The model looks very accurate, and the colors used for the finish match Federal Standard 595B color identification color chips. The wings are hinged, so they can be folded back into the storage position. All three landing gear are retractable, and the tailwheel can be canted left and right. The two large belly/torpedo bay doors are hinged and can be opened, and the included torpedo is molded with attachment brackets.

Overall, I think the Grumman TBF Avenger from Aiken’s Airplanes would make a nice addition to anyone’s collection if they have an interest in naval aviation history, especially those with a soft spot for our 41st president George H. W. Bush.— Gerry Yarrish

Bottom left: The Avenger is nicely detailed inside and out. Here, you see the lifelike instrument panel and the independently sliding canopy panels. Bottom right: The rotating aft gun turret is a focal point on the Avenger. It is nicely appointed with machine-gun and interior detailing.
