John­son took over his fa­ther’s franklin re­sources at age 24. he spent 56 years lead­ing the firm, known as franklin tem­ple­ton in­vest­ments, and re­tired in 2013. he re­mains the largest share­holder of the com­pany, which now has nearly $750 billion in as­sets un­der man­age­ment. his son gre­gory is chair­man and ceo; his half-brother ru­pert is vice-chair. in 2013, John­son, who played of­fen­sive guard at Yale for one year, pledged a $250 mil­lion gift to his alma mater, the univer­sity’s largest-ever do­na­tion.
