108. Robert Rowling
In 1996, Rowling used $500 million of proceeds from the sale of family oil and gas fields to purchase Omni Hotels & Resorts. Since then he has nearly doubled the chain to 60 locations with 21,000 rooms. More are on the way, with new projects in Boston, Louisville and Atlanta (in a venture with the Braves). Rowling also owns Gold’s Gym, which has more than 700 locations worldwide.
