Rees-jones gave up his ca­reer as a bank­ruptcy at­tor­ney in 1984 and jumped into oil. He even­tu­ally be­came a shale-frack­ing pi­o­neer, forg­ing 7 deals worth $7 billion in 7 years. To­day his Chief Oil & Gas is the na­tion’s big­gest pri­vately owned pro­ducer of nat­u­ral gas, with a focus on the Mar­cel­lus shale of Penn­syl­va­nia. At his Cook Canyon Ranch west of Fort Worth, he’s hosted par­ties fea­tur­ing the likes of Bon Jovi, the Ea­gles and Heather Lock­lear. His Rees-jones Foun­da­tion has paid out more than $300 mil­lion in grants to places like pe­di­atric hospi­tal CURE Ethiopia. “There’s got to be a higher pur­pose to serve in this life,” he says.
