140. Sheldon Solow
Son of a Russian immigrant bricklayer, Solow risked everything in 1972 to build 9 West 57th Street in Manhattan. Home to KKR, Apollo Global Management, Tiger Global Management and Chanel, the tower is known for its unobstructed views of Central Park. More than a decade after buying land on the eastern edge of Manhattan, Solow finally broke ground on a 42-story residential building overlooking the East River last year. Solow is on the board of trustees of NYU. Though he didn’t receive a degree, he took evening classes there while in high school.
