the son of rus­sian im­mi­grants grew up dirt poor; he told Forbes he still has prob­lems with his feet from wear­ing shoes that didn’t fit him when he was young. as a kid he worked as a bus­boy, waiter and hyp­no­tist in up­state new york. in col­lege he had a food-freezer busi­ness with 2 friends where he would of­ten work un­til the early hours of the morn­ing. he and arthur blank founded home de­pot af­ter be­ing fired from hard­ware store handy dan in 1978. he stepped down as chair­man in 2002 and has since largely fo­cused on phi­lan­thropy. in may, he do­nated $38 mil­lion to launch an in­sti­tute for brain health at the Univer­sity of colorado’s med­i­cal school that will treat vet­er­ans.
