Peg­ula worked at a coal mine and a gro­cery store while ma­jor­ing in petroleum en­gi­neer­ing at Penn State. He joined Getty Oil af­ter grad­u­a­tion, and in 1983 he cob­bled to­gether a $7,500 loan from friends and fam­ily to found his oil­and­gas ex­plorer East Re­sources. Peg­ula sold the bulk of its as­sets to Royal Dutch Shell for $4.7 billion in 2010. The next year he bought the NHL’S Buf­falo Sabres from Tom Golisano (No. 264) for $189 mil­lion and then, in 2014, out­bid groups led by Don­ald Trump and Jon Bon Jovi to pick up the NFL’S Buf­falo Bills for $1.4 billion.
