In Septem­ber, Mor­ris’ Bass Pro Shops com­pleted its $5 billion ac­qui­si­tion of ri­val re­tailer Ca­bela’s, nearly dou­bling the size of his com­pany. Mor­ris first started sell­ing fish tackle in 1972 and owned 100% of the busi­ness un­til the merger. Bass Pro is also the big­gest boat man­u­fac­turer by vol­ume in the U.S. A 350,000­square­foot nat­u­ral his­tory mu­seum and aquar­ium in Spring­field, funded largely by Mor­ris, opened in Septem­ber.
