179. Jerry Speyer
Longtime New York resident has been a big donor to some of the city’s elite education institutions, including his alma mater Columbia and his son’s high school. His real estate firm Tishman Speyer has owned, redeveloped or managed 165 million square feet, including Manhattan landmarks Rockefeller Center and the Chrysler Building. The firm also has real estate equity funds with $14 billion in net assets under management. Speyer got into business with his late fatherinlaw, Robert Tishman, in 1978. The marriage ended in divorce, but the company survived.
