186. Joe Gebbia
Chesky and Gebbia met at Rhode Island School of Design before coming up with Airbedandbreakfast.com, the precursor to Airbnb, in 2008. It was an idea born in desperation: They were broke and faced rising San Francisco rents and so invited guests to crash on mattresses in their apartment. The 2 designers brought in Blecharczyk—a former roommate of Gebbia’s with a Harvard computerscience degree—to become the company’s first engineer. Now Airbnb has over 4 million listings worldwide in 191 countries and hit 200 million guest bookings in August 2017.
