He bought out his partner in 1985 and expanded it to serve 3 million clients with $170 billion in assets under management. In October 2016, Joe Ricketts’ (No. 388) TD Ameritrade—a competitor—said it would buy Scottrade for $4 billion in cash and stock. The deal closed in September; Riney became the company’s second-largest individual shareholder and a special advisor to the CEO.
