He bought out his part­ner in 1985 and ex­panded it to serve 3 mil­lion clients with $170 billion in as­sets un­der man­age­ment. In Oc­to­ber 2016, Joe Rick­etts’ (No. 388) TD Amer­i­trade—a com­peti­tor—said it would buy Scot­trade for $4 billion in cash and stock. The deal closed in Septem­ber; Riney be­came the com­pany’s sec­ond-largest in­di­vid­ual share­holder and a spe­cial ad­vi­sor to the CEO.
