Shoen joined the com­pany in 1973, im­me­di­ately af­ter grad­u­at­ing from Har­vard Busi­ness School, where he had writ­ten his the­sis on the self­s­tor­age busi­ness. Thir­teen years later, he led a board­room coup, be­liev­ing he could run the busi­ness bet­ter than his fa­ther. To­day he is still chair­man of U-haul’s $3.4 billion (sales) par­ent com­pany, Amerco.
