The mas­ter­mind be­hind pri­vate eq­uity gi­ant Black­stone’s $104 billion (in as­sets) real es­tate port­fo­lio, Gray got a job at the firm right af­ter he grad­u­ated from the Univer­sity of Penn­syl­va­nia, where he stud­ied English and eco­nom­ics and as­pired to be­come a jour­nal­ist. He cred­its some of his suc­cess to his col­lege years. He worked at the rare-books li­brary and also as a guard check­ing IDS at a grad­u­ate-stu­dent dorm. He met his wife, Mindy, in a Ro­man­tic po­etry class. The cou­ple has given over $60 mil­lion to pro­grams sup­port­ing kids in low-in­come fam­i­lies, in­clud­ing build­ing health clin­ics in pub­lic schools and help­ing fam­i­lies start col­lege sav­ings ac­counts.
