The CEO of $25 billion asset management firm Baron Capital has had one of his best years since founding the firm in 1982. All but one of its funds are up at least 20% year-to-date. To help pay for college, he worked as a cabana boy, lifeguard, water-ski instructor and ice cream truck driver. He applied to medical school but didn’t get in. He went to law school at night but quit with a semester to go. He became a securities analyst in 1970 and named his dog Big Mac after one of his first successful stock recommendations.
