Af­ter his dis­charge, he got bach­e­lor’s and mas­ter’s degrees in physics from the Univer­sity of Louisiana (then called Louisiana State Univer­sity at New Or­leans) and a com­puter science PH.D. from the Univer­sity of Utah. He spent 5 years as an elec­tri­cal-en­gi­neer­ing pro­fes­sor at Stan­ford, started 3-D graph­ics gi­ant Sil­i­con Graph­ics in 1982 and co­founded Netscape with Marc An­dreessen (now a bil­lion­aire) in 1994. His lat­est startup, Com­mand­scape, seeks to help au­to­mate and se­cure homes.
