Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania native and son of a dry goods store owner announced he would donate $25 million to his alma mater, Abington High School. It was lauded as the biggest gift ever to a public school, but the plan to rename the school after him was scotched after a backlash from the community. Schwarzman still came through with his gift. Other notable donations include $100 million to the New York Public Library and $117 million to Schwarzman Scholars, which sends students from around the world to a one-year master’s program in China.
