Over the past 5 years the Frist Foun­da­tion, set up by Frist and his fa­ther, has given more than $50 mil­lion in grants to non­prof­its in the Nashville area and across the coun­try. Al­though Frist hasn’t held an ex­ec­u­tive po­si­tion at HCA since 2001, he con­tin­ues to ben­e­fit from the com­pany’s ex­pand­ing net­work of 179 hos­pi­tals, up from 170 at the be­gin­ning of 2017. He owns nearly 20% of the hospi­tal op­er­a­tor, and his sons Thomas III and Wil­liam are board mem­bers.
