THE 100 TOP-EARNING athletes hail from 23 countries and compete in ten sports, with Americans (65) and baseball players (26) the most numerous. Over the past 12 months these 100 sportsmen and -women brought in a cumulative $3.1 billion, 29% of which came from endorsements and appearances.
Real Madrid soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh off scoring the clinching penalty kick in the Champions League final in May, led the way with $88 million, $32 million of it from partners such as Nike, Tag Heuer and Herbalife—the first time since 2001 that anyone other than Tiger Woods or Floyd Mayweather took top honors.
