LOCATING AN 1865 first edition of Alice in Wonderland can be as difficult as a game of flamingo croquet. Only 23 copies still exist—and only 5 are in private hands. Christie’s will sell one of those 5 at auction this month, and experts expect it to fetch $2 million to $3 million. The book, bound in red cloth with a gold image of the Cheshire Cat on its cover, originally belonged to George William Kitchin, an Oxford colleague of Lewis Carroll’s, who received it as a gift from the author.
