The band of Cambridge-educated mathematicians and former intelligence o cers at Darktrace, a cybersecurity firm, take inspiration from an unusual source: biology. The human immune system, explains CEO and cofounder Nicole Eagan, has an “innate sense of self and not-self” and is able to identify and destroy intruding cells. Darktrace works with similar logic. Its AI analyzes user behavior to tell who belongs and who doesn’t. By tracking abnormal behavior instead of watching for specific threats, Darktrace’s system can protect against attacks that come out of the blue or spot when users may be going rogue. — Christian Kreznar
